How to Switch to a Dumbphone in 2026 Without Breaking Your Life

Switching to a dumbphone doesn’t mean chucking your iPhone into the Long Island Sound. It means replacing your smartphone’s jobs one at a time (calls, texts, 2FA codes, maps, music, photos, work chat) with simpler tools. You get the mind distractor out of your pocket without completely disconnecting.

Earlier this year I ghosted Spotify for 60 days and lived off a CD tower I’d almost thrown in the trash.

Nintendo Mini Classics Review: Why Mario’s Cement Factory Is the Ultimate Pocket Zen

Mario’s Cement Factory

The 1998 Nintendo Mini Classics reissue of Mario’s Cement Factory is the ultimate distraction-free retro gaming keychain. Running on two watch batteries with zero internet connection, it is the perfect Slow Tech fidget tool to keep you off your smartphone while waiting in line.

I realized this standing in line at the post office last Tuesday. The person in front of me was scrolling TikTok. The person behind me was talking loudly on the phone. I reached for my pocket to pull out my phone, a reflex as automatic as breathing.

But I stopped.

Instead, I patted my other pocket and pulled out my keys. Attached to them is a bright yellow square of plastic roughly the size of a matchbook.

This is the Nintendo Mini Classic: Mario’s Cement Factory. It has no internet connection. It has no backlight. It has two buttons to play the game. And it is the best tool I own for keeping my brain from rotting while I wait for the woman right our of a Bukowski novel.

There were 4,000 new gadgets launched at CES this week, promising to change your life. 3,995 of them just want to steal your attention to show you ads. Here are the other 5.

I waded through the sewer of dopamine-tech so you don’t have to.

CES is where tech goes to scream at you. But buried in the noise, there were a handful of products that get it. Here’s what I found.
